Innovating land management structures in the Old City of Fez

An AUA member recently completed an innovative proposal for leveraging traditional endowments (waqf) to direct neighborhood revitalization, to improve the public sphere, and to finance public services and infrastructure in the Medina of Fez, Morocco. AUA conducted a historical survey of Fez’s traditional endowments, used GIS-based information to analyze the current state of endowed properties, and proposed both institutional and spatial policy recommendations to tap into the waqf’s potential as a heritage preservation and an economic and social development tool.
